Staying signed in
How long Wattle keeps you signed in, trusting your own laptop for 7 or 30 days, and signing out your other devices.
Wattle signs you out after a stretch with nobody using it, so a computer left on overnight doesn't stay open. On your own laptop you can trust the device instead, and stay signed in for 7 or 30 days. It still locks with your PIN whenever you step away.
Common tasks
| I want to... | Do this |
|---|---|
| Stay signed in on my own laptop | Tick Trust this device for 30 days under Sign In. Or, already signed in: Settings → Security → This device → Trust this device, then your PIN |
| See how long this device is trusted for | Settings → Security → This device |
| Stop trusting this device | Settings → Security → This device → Stop trusting |
| Sign out a laptop I've lost, or one I used once | Settings → Security → Sign out other devices |
| Change how long a trusted device lasts, or turn it off | Settings → Security → Trusted devices → 7 days, 30 days or Off. Vets and practice managers can do this |
| Change how long until everyone else is signed out | Settings → Security → Require sign-in (4, 8, 12 or 24 hours) |
What a trusted device does
| Untrusted (the default) | Trusted | |
|---|---|---|
| Screen locks after 15, 30 or 60 min idle | Yes, PIN to unlock | Yes, PIN to unlock |
| Signed out after the clinic's sign-in window (8 hours by default) | Yes | No |
| Full sign-in again | After the window | After 7 or 30 days, whatever you've been doing |
A trusted device only skips the full sign-in. The PIN lock never switches off.
Only trust a device you alone use. Anyone who knows your PIN can use Wattle on a trusted device, including the controlled drug register, and everything they do is recorded under your name. A shared front-desk computer should never be trusted.
Changing it for the clinic
Trusted devices are on, for 30 days, unless your clinic has changed that. Nothing is trusted until a person chooses to trust their own device. Everyone can see the setting; vets and practice managers can change it. If yours is greyed out, ask one of them.
- Settings → Security → Trusted devices.
- Choose 7 days, 30 days or Off.
Shortening it or choosing Off takes effect straight away: any device trusted for longer is cut back, or stops being trusted. Lengthening it asks you to confirm first.
Sole trader on your own laptop? Tick Trust this device for 30 days the next time you sign in. After that you'll mostly see the PIN screen, and a full sign-in about once a month.
Shared computers in the clinic? Leave the box unticked on them. If you would rather nobody could tick it, set Trusted devices to Off.
The Trust this device box
The box is under Sign In on every device, unless that browser last signed in to a clinic that has trusted devices Off.
It is unticked every time. Leaving it unticked doesn't stop trusting a device that is already trusted.
Signing out your other devices
Settings → Security → Sign out other devices signs out every device except the one you're using, and stops trusting all of them.
- Each one needs a full sign-in the next time it opens Wattle, or the next time its screen unlocks. The PIN won't get it back in.
- A device that is open and in use right now carries on until its screen next locks.
Lost a laptop or had one stolen? Do this straight away, then email hello@wattlevet.com so we can block the account's sign-in as well.
Gotchas
- No Trust this device box? This browser last signed in to a clinic that has trusted devices off.
- "Trusted devices are off for this clinic" when trusting from Settings: ask a vet or practice manager at your clinic to turn them back on.
- "Sign out and back in, then try again": this device was signed out from another device. Sign in properly first.
- A private or incognito window can't be trusted. It forgets everything when it closes.
- Clearing your browser's data makes it a new device: sign in again and trust it again.
